Hearthstone Global Games : Dethelor and Greece are going through the first round

Some important Hearthstone Global Games series took place last Tuesday for Greece. Defeating Hong-Kong was meaning qualification. Losing against Yulsic and his teammates was meaning an HGG-elimination.

These series finally ended up on a score of 3-2 for Greece, lead by an awesome Dethelor. We have been interviewing him after this impressive victory. His country had begun with a sad 0-2 on HGG. Then, the greek squad managed to "reverse sweep" this score and had a 3-wins streak. They're now sure to be through the first phase of the competition. "Bravo" to the greek roster, and particularly to our Millenium player, Dimitris "Dethelor" Theodoropoulos. You can watch the replay of these series and then meet Dethelor for an awesome interview !

My first question is very general, but can you tell me a little more about the HGG series you played with Greece last Tuesday ? What about this Lorewalker Cho repop ? Did you "all in" with your combo Dopplegangster-Evolve ? Personally, I thought this play was very "ballzy"

Dethelor: The Shaman mirror was a very interesting game multiple tough decisions. The Cho on our side created a weird situation but we went for the play to win. Playing this combo before your opponent is very important in this matchup so we could afford to give an Evolve to your opponent. We had the initiative and after trading favorable and played our second Evolve we got a very big advantage and closed the game easily.

Logan is on an incredible streak of five losses, isn't it too hard for him ?

Dethelor : I don’t think so - he seems to be enjoying that, it has become a meme at this point! We say that we use Logan to attract all the bad RNG for our team so we can win the other games! If you watch again the Hunter vs Mage game you can see what I am talking about ^^

Did you decide to be the Ace for this so important game against Hong Kong ?

Dethelor : Yes, it’s usually between Tsibou and me and I told him I to leave it on me this time. Tsibou has been the Ace Player for 2 times and we lost both games, and we won all the series I was the Ace Player. It’s probably a coincidence but it has worked wonders until then.

Talking about last game. Yulsic gave you soooooo much time to develop. When did you understand it was a win ?

Dethelor : My opening hand was a very good one and I knew I was favored except if he had a very strong Murloc curve, which luckily wasn’t the case. I knew I won the game the moment I drew the Hungry Crab; I could complete the Quest easily with my Flame Elementals while also controlling the board. It is true that Yulsic gave me too much time but I believe he realized his chances for winning were incredibly low so he tried to force a mistake from our side.

Did you practice a lot with Quest Rogue ? Did Feno help you about that ?

Dethelor : I wouldn’t say Quest Rogue is one of the decks I play the most. I played several games before our series but Logan and Tsibou are also experienced with the deck so we were feeling comfortable. The decklist with the Crabs worked also wonders, since one of its main purposes was to destroy their Paladin (we saw their past games and they played a lot of Midrange Murloc Paladin). As for Feno, he was the one that first introduced me to the deck back in our bootcamp in Paris. He was probably the first player to popularize the Vanish list, so he definitely knows his stuff!

Can you tell us about Fibeli3, who's done some recent good stuff ?

Dethelor : Fibeli3 has been around in the Greek Hearthstone scene since 2014 and was the player I was afraid the most during that period. Since then he has made a lot of breaks from Hearthstone and never travelled to an abroad event but every time he returned, he was a very tough opponent. One of his biggest assets is his competitive nature (he used to be a good HoN/MobA player). Unfortunately he got unlucky in the last series and couldn’t qualify to Shanghai but I believe we will see a lot more from him if he keeps playing competitively.

Which team do you absolutely NOT want to play in the following phase ? And why ?

Dethelor : We are not afraid of any teams but I consider the United States to be the strongest. They have four good players with different strengths, including Amnesiac who is one of the best right now. They also have the strongest possible practice partners and first access first a lot of information (new decks/tech cards etc.). Russia is also a team of superstars but the fact that the US have access to more top level players and information, make them scarier.

What are you personal goals for the Summer season?

Dethelor : Qualifying for the Summer Playoffs and a good result in Dreamhack Summer & Valencia. I managed to get 11 HCT points in May which puts me in a good position. I also consider myself mainly a tournament player so I am way more motivated before and during big tournaments.
